Installation

If you are installing Testimony, then the Discovery Mode installation transport is included in the Testimony installation package. However, if you want to install Discovery Mode for Testimony before you have installed your Testimony Central System, then you can simply import the Discovery Mode transport into a system which is able to connect (via RFC) to your production system. This system can either be your (eventual) Testimony Central System, or any other SAP ABAP system with SAP NetWeaver version > 7.01.

Creating an RFC connection and production userid

Discovery Mode works by making RFC calls to your production system to retrieve data stored in the system’s performance database (ST03N and/or STAD data). You therefore need to set up a standard Type 3 RFC connection from your central system to your production system. This connection connects using a userid of type SYSTEM on the production system that has authorisation to execute function modules in the following function groups:

• SCSM_COLLECTOR
• SCSM_READ_STATISTICS
  

Adjusting statistics gathering

By default, an SAP system gathers statistics into its performance database (ST03N) and aggregates the “overnight hours”. This means that you can see hourly data for the hours 06:00-21:00, but that data from 21:00-00:00 and from 00:00-06:00 are aggregated into one time slice each. In order to get the most benefit from the Discovery Mode, you should change this behaviour in your production system so that all hours are reported separately.

You can do this by running program SWNC_CONFIG_TIMEPROFILE on the production system using the option “Calculate all hours seperately”.

Once this has been done, data will be reported hourly for all hours:

*It is not essential for the use of Discovery Mode for this change to the performance data time profile to be made, so if this is not permitted in your production system then you can still continue to use Discovery Mode. However, the results – especially for overnight hours – will be less granular.

Authorisations for using the Discovery Mode

As well as the authorisations for the RFC user in production (detailed above), the user(s) who will be running the Discovery Mode reports in the central system also need authorisation to execute programs (in SE38/SA38) belonging to authorisation group /BTI/AUT. This is done using the authorisation object S_PROGRAM.
